Background and Aim:Regardless of the positive economic effects, the adverse environmental impacts of mines make it necessary to assess environmental impacts. The purpose of this study was to determine the environmental impacts of granite and marble quarries in Khorasan Razavi province. Materials and methods:In this descriptive-analytical study after field visits, information was collected through a checklist and data analysis was performed using RIAM and Leopold matrices. Results:Analysis of mine information through the Leopold matrix showed that the average overall ranking in all environments including cultural, socio-economic, biological and physical was -1.46, which indicates poor negative consequences. Also, the most harmful consequences were in the biological environment. According to the results of the RIAM matrix, the most negative impacts of mining occur in the physical-chemical environment. Conclusion:Exploration activities of the granite and marble quarries in Khorasan Razavi with respect to the RIAM matrix generally have moderate to slight negative effects on the physico-chemical environment and with respect to the Leopold matrix have minor adverse effects on the biological and physico-chemical environments. The continuation of exploitation of the Khorasan Razavi stone mine along with environmental considerations can, in addition to realizing the national development goals, lead to the creation of job opportunities and the construction of infrastructural facilities.

Background and Objectives: Cement production process produces million tons of by products such as dust, toxic gases and heavy metals associated with health (respiratory) risks and environmental pollution. The aim of the current paper is to assess the environmental impact of Zaveh Cement plant by using Iranian Leopold Matrix. Materials and method: The current descriptive analytical study examined the current status of the region's environment; then reviewing the technical sources of the project was performed in order to identify the most important activities of operation and construction phases. Finally, Iranian matrix method was selected to assess the environmental impact of cement plant. Results: Based on the obtained results, the major negative environmental impacts on the physical part include soil pollution and erosion, air pollution, and noise pollution, respectively. The major negative biological impacts are the impacts on plant and animal species density, and the quality of the habitat, respectively. According to the results of the evaluation conducted using Iranian matrix method on Zaveh-Torbat cement plant, with the separation of construction and operation, there is no column with values less than -3.1, and the number of rows with values less than -3.1 constitutes less than 50 %. Conclusions: According to the Iranian matrix, the project of Zaveh-Torbat cement plant is acceptable with the implementation of integrated environmental management strategies.

Background&Objectives: In regard to the serious consequences of improper waste disposal, environmental impact assessment techniques are used to evaluate the different scenarios for waste management and minimize the negative impacts. The aim of this study was the use of Iranian Matrix and RIAM to minimize environmental impacts in Qaemshahr landfill and presenting suitable methods for efficient waste management Matrial&Methods: In this study, the existing condition of Qaemshahr landfill was compared with human’s environmental criteria for MSW landfills based on Department of the Environment (DOE) of Iran. Meanwhile, EIA of Qaemshahr solid waste landfill was carried out with two methods, RIAM and Leopold Matrix. The upgrading of existing landfill, reconstruction with compost plant and relocation of landfill were evaluated according to physiochemical, physicochemical (PC), biological-ecological (BE), sociological/cultural (SC), economical/operational (EO) economical-social and cultural components. Results: The results showed that Qaemshahr landfill lacks the environmental criteria for MSW landfills. Also, the RIAM and Iranian matrix results indicated that upgrading of existing landfill, construction of compost plant, relocation and construction of the sanitary landfill have total environmental scores as -793 and -2.26, -387 and -2.22 , -69 and -0.76 respectively. Conclusion : It is noticeable that the current process of landfill in Qaemshahr will lead to harmful health consequences. So, construction of landfill space (the third option) was chosen as the most suitable option with as little harm as possible on the environment.
